The Mark Experience was performed by volunteers from Cambridge churches on 7th & 8th March 09. See below for how it went:

‘The Mark Experience’ is a 90-minute drama which presents the whole of Mark’s Gospel:

Four grumpy disciples climbed into the boat for yet another trip, and yet another surprise.

A woman limped to catch hold of Jesus’ garment, desperate for help.

Pharisees glared down from their disapproving towers, making disapproving comments that utterly out of touch with the reality before them.

The Mark Experience was witty, accessible, powerful and real. The audience was carried along by a the pace of the gospel’s narrative whilst being provoked to think and reconsider who Jesus is. The dialogue was peppered with humour, ‘5 loaves and 2 fish—that wouldn’t feed John’, and the actors rowed, died, ate and argued with gusto and confidence.

The actors were not actors though. Just 6 weeks ago, they began learning the order of events in Mark’s gospel, preparing them to learn the stage directions over just 3 days. We are enormously grateful to them for the time they have put in and for being willing to step out in faith to do something new. Our thanks also go to Andrew Page, Chris White and the Townsend family for their part. Colleagues and friends were really keen to come and see the team in action. Notwithstanding some first night wrinkles, the whole experience brought the truths of Jesus’ words home:

"the whole 'Mark Experience' has been one that I will never forget. It has strengthened my faith in Jesus and showed me personally that - as Jesus teaches - 'whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.'"

The Mark Experience is a powerful way of communicating the writer’s encounter with Jesus and compellingly commends the authenticity of his account. It presents Jesus as a person who couldn’t help but prompt genuine questions and who had plenty of difficult questions to ask too.
